Energy and contrast: how to stop an AI song feeling flat

Flat does not necessarily mean quiet. A song can be loud from the first second and still feel flat because nothing changes. Energy comes from difference: the listener needs a before and an after.

Design three energy states — low, medium and high — and make sections move between them using fewer or more events, not just louder volume.

Energy has several controls

Volume is only one. Perceived energy also changes with note density, rhythmic subdivision, vocal register, harmonic tension, low-end activity, stereo width, brightness and the number of simultaneous layers.

  • Density: how many events happen at once.
  • Register: higher parts often feel more urgent; lower sustained parts can feel heavier.
  • Rhythm: faster subdivisions increase motion.
  • Harmony: more tension or faster chord movement can increase forward pull.
  • Space: removing elements before a return can make the same chorus feel bigger.

Build an energy curve before writing the prompt

Draw a simple line for the song: 2/10 intro, 4/10 verse, 6/10 pre-chorus, 8/10 chorus, 5/10 second verse, 3/10 breakdown, 9/10 final chorus. The numbers are not technical measurements; they force you to think in relative contrast.

The cheapest lift is often subtraction

If every section already contains full drums, bass, pads, guitars and backing vocals, there is little room to grow. Remove something before the important moment. A two-bar kick drop, narrower stereo field or single dry vocal can create more impact than adding another five layers.

Less useful

Make the chorus bigger with more drums, more synths, more guitars and more backing vocals.

More useful

Pre-chorus removes kick and sub for two bars and narrows the mix; chorus restores full low end, opens stereo guitars and adds one harmony line.

Use contrast inside sections too

A 16-bar verse does not need one energy level. Bars 1–8 can stay sparse; bars 9–16 can add bass movement or denser phrasing. Small internal changes keep the section alive without turning it into a new song.
