AI Personas and virtual artists: what happens when the singer does not exist?
An artist profile can have a name, photographs, releases and followers while the person shown in the profile does not exist. That does not automatically make the project fraudulent, and it does not necessarily mean the music was generated by AI. The central question is transparency: who or what does the public identity behind the music represent?
Spotify defines an AI Persona as an artist whose public identity represents a photorealistic AI-generated human. The badge concerns identity, not necessarily how the music was made. Artists can self-disclose, Spotify can apply a “Likely AI Persona” label after review, and these profiles are excluded from editorial and personalized recommendations by default unless listeners intentionally engage.
What exactly is an AI Persona?
Spotify uses the term for an artist profile whose public identity — including name and imagery — appears to represent a photorealistic human generated by AI rather than a real person.
A human artist who uses AI in composition, production or artwork is not automatically an AI Persona. A stage name is not one either. Spotify also distinguishes fictional characters that are not presented as photorealistic AI-generated humans.
Why Spotify created a badge for artists who may not exist
Spotify says listeners disliked discovering that profiles which seemed to represent real humans were actually AI-generated identities. In 2026 it began rolling out AI Persona badges as part of a broader Artist Identity & Trust programme.
An artist can disclose the identity voluntarily and receive an “AI Persona” badge, or Spotify can review the profile and apply a “Likely AI Persona” badge. The profile owner can then confirm the disclosure or appeal.
The badge does not tell you whether the song itself was made with AI
Spotify explicitly separates public identity from the production process. An AI Persona could release human-made music, AI-generated music or a hybrid of both. Conversely, a real human artist may use AI extensively without being an AI Persona.
Spotify handles song-level creation separately through tools such as AI Credits and SongDNA. YouTube is moving in a similar direction for music delivery by allowing partners to identify content as fully or partly generated with generative AI.
AI Personas can exist, but they lose some automatic discovery
Spotify does not ban AI Personas. Listeners can play, follow and interact with them. But their music is not included by default in editorial or personalized recommendations unless the listener has shown intentional interest, for example by following the artist.
Spotify’s separate Verified by Spotify programme is designed to signal authentic human artist identities. At launch, profiles that primarily represented AI-generated or AI-persona artists were not eligible for that verification.
When a virtual artist is legitimate — and when it becomes deceptive
A fictional or synthetic artist can be a legitimate creative project when the presentation is clear and does not pretend to be a real person. Virtual bands and invented characters existed long before generative AI; the new difficulty is that photorealistic systems can make a nonexistent person look ordinary and believable.
The long-term advantage of a virtual artist is not fooling the listener. It is the ability to build a coherent character, visual world and catalogue while being transparent about what the audience is seeing. As platform labeling improves, projects built on clarity are more sustainable than projects built mainly on ambiguity.
An AI Persona is not the same thing as AI-generated music. It is a public artist identity that appears to be a photorealistic AI-generated human. Spotify now labels those identities and limits their automatic recommendation unless listeners intentionally engage. Synthetic artists can exist, but pretending that a nonexistent person is real is becoming harder to sustain.
